The Dark Knight Returns! Batman 2 Title and Release Date Unveiled

After months of speculation, DC Studios finally gave fans their first glimpse at its upcoming movie slate in the form of the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Although Matt Reeves’ BatVerse isn’t a part of the DCU, DC Studios executives James Gunn and Peter Safran still oversee the production. Therefore, on Tuesday, the duo revealed the new name and release date for the highly anticipated follow-up.

The Matt Reeves picture, now titled The Batman — Part II, is scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025. During a press event on Monday, Gunn and Safran praised Reeves’ work on the series and confirmed that the world he’s building is a part of DC Studios’ non-DCU “Elseworlds” line. Additionally, they hinted that the director might helm a third film in the franchise to complete a trilogy.

During Monday’s press event, Gunn stated that Matt is currently working on Batman 2, which he considers a Batman crime saga, and will include the Penguin TV series. According to Gunn, the project is independent of other works, and Matt is dedicated to the project. Additionally, he mentioned that Matt presented some impressive and exciting ideas to them recently, and they plan to move forward with the project.

Safran confirmed that the film remains under the DC Studios umbrella, despite not being a part of the primary franchise. He stated, “We are fully committed to the success of Batman, just as we are with everything else.”

Many fans quickly took a liking to The Batman upon its release last year, thanks to its fresh interpretation of Bruce Wayne, played by Robert Pattinson.

Reeves had previously described his approach to the Caped Crusader: “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. Reeves has emphasized that the upcoming Batman film will heavily feature the Dark Knight’s detective skills, a relatively minor element in past movies. He also expressed hope that the story will be both exciting and emotionally impactful, as the responsibility for its success rests squarely on his shoulders.

He wants to explore the character’s journey as he tracks down criminals and solves crimes, allowing for character development and transformation. Reeves also noted that the comics have a rich history of Batman’s detective work, and he hopes to do justice to that aspect of the character.
